Foam-white crests break across the water, and concentric wave lines carry the eye inward to the vortex. Rock-brown sea cliffs anchor the lower edge, while a distant headland and a flock of birds over the water open up the space. A vertical title cartouche at the top carries the calligraphy 六十余州名所図会, 阿波, 鳴門の風波 and the artist's name 広重, which fix the print's place in the series.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Naruto Strait, between Awa and Awaji, is one of the most celebrated natural landmarks in Japan, and its tidal whirlpools were a subject of fascination throughout the Edo period. The print expresses the sublime power of the sea in the rhythm of its currents, a theme central to Hiroshige's landscape work. Made around 1853 for the Views of Famous Places in the Sixty-Odd Provinces, it reflects the period's appetite for travel and scenic beauty, presented as a catalogue of iconic places rendered in classic ukiyo-e woodblock technique.

Designed for the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the whirlpool's spiral can define the shape of the piece rather than sit inside a rectangle. Its flat surface suits a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window pane, where the swirl of blue reads as a focal point at close range. Hiroshige's wave lines were designed to pull the eye around a single centre, and a sticker placed at arm's length does exactly that.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-naruto-whirlpool-awa-province-from-the-series-views-of-famous-places-in-the-sixty-odd-ca-1853-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWHRS-2X2-544-alt-3.webp?v=1785654529
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-naruto-whirlpool-awa-province-from-the-series-views-of-famous-places-in-the-sixty-odd-ca-1853-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
