A flatfish with dark spots anchors the scene, joined by two red-eyed sea fish and a long, slender fish with red fins. A bundle of dried straw or grass sits among them, and the fish are arranged so each keeps its own outline clearly visible. Red seals and the artist's signature, 広重, mark the sheet as a finished woodblock print.

Meaning & Symbolism

The series title announces its purpose: to catalogue the varieties of fish found in Japanese waters. Hiroshige's sheets belong to the Edo period's broad interest in zoology and the natural world, and they blend that observational curiosity with the refined draughtsmanship of ukiyo-e. Kanagashira and karei, the two fish named in the title, are presented with the same attention to form and texture, so the image reads as both fine art and natural history.

Cut to the Fish

Because a kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, the fish in this design come off the backing as their own shapes, with no surrounding border to frame them. The sticker suits smooth, flat surfaces such as laptops, journals, and windows, and it works best where the composition can be seen up close. Placed indoors, the sticker lets a single small woodblock study hold its own on a desk or page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-kanagashira-and-karei-fish-from-the-series-uozukushi-every-variety-of-fish-1830s-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWHRS-2X2-354-alt-3.webp?v=1785657192
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-kanagashira-and-karei-fish-from-the-series-uozukushi-every-variety-of-fish-1830s-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
