Muted indigo, sage green, and grey dominate, with the dimming light picked out in ochre and cream. Travellers under umbrellas and a porter carrying baskets on a pole move through the wet street, while pine trees, a wooden fence, and a shrine building anchor the vertical panel. The printed title along the margin reads 名所江戸百景 (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo) and 赤坂桐畑雨中夕景 (Paulownia Fields at Akasaka in Evening Rain), with the signature 一立斎広重画 (drawn by Ichiryusai Hiroshige).

Meaning & Symbolism

The series documents the famous places of Edo, and this print turns a particular district into a mood. The paulownia, a tree that marks the arrival of summer, anchors the season, while the rain speaks to the brief, shifting nature of weather. The figures moving through the downpour stand for ordinary life carrying on inside a passing atmosphere. Hiroshige II took his name from the celebrated Hiroshige, and this work carries the lineage of that landscape tradition into the 1850s.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is shaped to its own outline, so the artwork is seen as a single figure rather than a framed rectangle. The rain lines and the tall, narrow composition suit a small object that is handled and looked at up close, letting the detail of the paulownia leaves and falling rain read clearly at that scale.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-ii-paulownia-trees-at-akasaka-in-the-evening-rain-1859-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-29679169761114836981-alt-3.webp?v=1785643306
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-ii-paulownia-trees-at-akasaka-in-the-evening-rain-1859-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
