Its black hull and diagonal rigging lines cut hard against pale sky blue and sea teal, and a small boat sits near its side. Red touches draw the eye along the vessel: the stern gallery and the pennant flags. On the left, a pine clings to a coastal cliff, and breaking waves curl over ochre rocks at the base of the scene. A vertical title cartouche carries the characters 諸國名所百景 and 海岸, which place the print within its series and name the shore.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print records a moment of contact between foreign shipping and the Japanese coast during the late Edo period. Tsushima sat on the sea routes that carried Dutch traders and their vessels into Japanese waters, so the anchored ship stands for mid-nineteenth-century maritime exchange. Hiroshige II sets the Western hull against a native coastline of rock, pine and surf, and the balance between the two gives the work its theme of coastal geography and international relations.

Built to Follow the Outline of the Ship

Kiss-cut construction means this artwork is cut to its own outline, so the hull, rigging and pennants can be followed as the sticker's edge rather than framed by a rectangle. The backing stays intact, so the design peels cleanly from its page. It suits smooth, flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where the silhouette of a sailing ship reads clearly against the surface beneath it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-ii-dutch-ship-at-anchor-off-the-coast-of-tsushima-3rd-month-1859-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-28810776875130831019-alt-3.webp?v=1785643536
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-ii-dutch-ship-at-anchor-off-the-coast-of-tsushima-3rd-month-1859-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
