Deep blue water and cream sky give the scene its calm, and straw yellow and dark brown fill the foreground. Two fishermen cast a net from a boat, a third figure in a blue patterned jacket and straw skirt stands at the water's edge, and a rower in a red coat works a paddle nearby. The temple hall with its red pagoda sits in the vignette, framed by pine trees. Vertical columns of Japanese text run down the margins, with the title and series inscriptions set in the same restrained hand as the image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The series title, 観音霊験記 (Miracles of Kannon), places the print within a body of works that record the miraculous efficacy of Kannon, the bodhisattva of compassion. The inscription 西國順礼三拾番 refers to the Saigoku pilgrimage of thirty sacred temples, and 近江長命寺 names this site in Ōmi Province. Hiroshige II's composition follows the Edo period's habit of tying sacred places to the ordinary life of their surroundings, so fishermen and boatmen appear alongside the temple. The result reads as reverence expressed through daily landscape, the mood of the mid-nineteenth century woodblock tradition.

Where This Print Meets the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the vertical panel and the vignette can be followed as drawn, with the temple and boat as the focal point rather than a rectangle around them. Ukiyo-e was made to be held and looked into closely, and the sticker keeps that intimacy, carrying a sacred Edo landscape onto a surface you pass every day.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-ii-chmeiji-temple-chmeiji-from-the-series-miracles-of-kannon-1859-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-32992603834931159881-alt-3.webp?v=1785643025
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-ii-chmeiji-temple-chmeiji-from-the-series-miracles-of-kannon-1859-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
