The palette is restrained: black ink for the strongest contours and shadows, graded greys for the robes and the softer tonal passages, and warm olive-brown and tan washes that give the paper an aged, earthy warmth. A large hoop earring marks the figure's ear, and the hooded robes fall in broad, expressive strokes. Nothing competes with the face, which carries the whole painting.

Meaning & Symbolism

Daruma stands for perseverance, meditation, and the transmission of truth beyond words, the core teachings of Zen. The legend of his nine years of wall-gazing, which left his legs without use, is the story behind the stillness in this portrait. In Japanese culture, images of Daruma remind viewers of inner resolve and the continuing pursuit of awakening through disciplined practice. The painting is attributed to Unkoku Tōgan, a Momoyama-period painter who revived the ink-monochrome style of Sesshū Tōyō and founded the Unkoku school. He received patronage from elite samurai and produced works that combined monumental scale with dynamic brushwork.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to the outline of its design, so the figure and its robes become the object's own silhouette rather than a rectangle with a picture inside it. The image suits flat surfaces such as laptops and journals, where the stern profile can be seen up close and read as a quiet, focused presence. Each sticker carries the scroll's ink-and-paper tones into a small, personal format for collectors of Zen-inspired and Japanese art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unkoku-tgan-portrait-of-daruma-early-17th-century-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788135890
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unkoku-tgan-portrait-of-daruma-early-17th-century-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
