A circular halo frames the central figure, whose robes and staff rise through the upper field. Near black, antique gold, and brocade gold dominate, with the gold rendered as a floral brocade pattern that gives the surface its rich texture. Deep teal provides a cool ground against which the warmer tones sit, while a single rose-pink lotus anchors the base of the composition beside wisps of cloud. The painting carries no text or numerals; its authority comes from line, colour, and the frontal, deliberate stillness of the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

Jizō is a compassionate figure in Buddhist tradition, shown here in the act of raigo, the welcoming descent. The staff and wish-granting jewel mark the figure as a protective guide for those seeking salvation, and the lotus at the feet signals the Pure Land. The clouds at the base frame the moment of transition, where the Bodhisattva leaves the transcendent realm to meet the devotee in the mundane world. Jizō is the savior of all sentient beings, particularly those suffering in the cycles of rebirth, and this image expresses the urgent desire for spiritual relief that shaped religious life in the period. Painted in the early 14th century, the work belongs to the late Kamakura period and reflects its focus on personal faith and the accessibility of divine intervention. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Jizō worship in historical Japan.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the figure, halo, and staff define the edge of the object itself. The scroll's vertical rhythm translates directly to a single compact shape that can be placed on a laptop, journal, or window, where the descending figure reads as a small, close devotional image.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-welcoming-descent-of-the-bodhisattva-jizo-early-14th-century-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788226720
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-welcoming-descent-of-the-bodhisattva-jizo-early-14th-century-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
