Four seated figures with gold skin and circular haloes occupy the grid, each framed in its own compartment. Royal blue and gold ochre dominate the field, with rose pink and vermilion red marking the figures' garments and borders, and cream giving the paper its ground. Within the scene, one seated figure holds a fan, another a lotus bud, and a third wears jewelled necklaces. The painting is opaque watercolour on paper, and its flat, saturated colour and rhythmic repetition of figures give the composition its strong graphic presence.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene comes from the Kalpasutra, a Jain text that narrates the lives of the Tirthankaras. The sixth night after a birth was a threshold in traditional Indian belief, when fortune and destiny were thought to be written by the deities, and the vigil marks the divine attention given to Mahavira's arrival. The haloes, lotus and fan belong to the visual language of sacred figures in Jain painting. Manuscripts like this were commissioned by wealthy patrons and monastic leaders to preserve sacred history and to earn spiritual merit. This leaf belongs to the Western Indian manuscript tradition of fifteenth-century Gujarat and its surrounding regions.

On This Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to its own outline, so the composition stands alone without a surrounding border. The grid of haloed figures and the bold blue and gold field read cleanly at a small scale, and the cut edge follows the shape of the painted panel as it appears on the folio.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-vigil-on-the-sixth-night-after-mahaviras-birth-folio-from-a-kalpasutra-manuscript-15th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788132913
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-vigil-on-the-sixth-night-after-mahaviras-birth-folio-from-a-kalpasutra-manuscript-15th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
