Against it, a mounted armored warrior on a white horse leads a group of foot soldiers carrying bows, while kneeling archers hold the lower register. Near-black armor, dark green, vermilion red and white accents pick out the figures. A thatched hut and a wooden river crossing sit among the vertical label panels, and a single character, 川, meaning "river," marks the crossing.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Hōgen (1156) and Heiji (1160) rebellions were mid-twelfth-century civil wars that broke the power of the imperial court and lifted the warrior class to dominance. The screen tells that story through its clashes, sieges and intrigues, and its themes of loyalty, betrayal and the hard transfer of power still define the samurai tradition. Narrative screens like this one were both decorative objects and records of how that tradition began.

Why It Suits a Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the warriors, cloud ground and banners can be followed exactly as the painter drew them. The result is a single piece of the screen that can be placed on a notebook, a laptop or a case, carrying a fragment of twelfth-century samurai history into everyday use.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v79-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788129750
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v79-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
