Swordsmen fight along a path, and fallen figures lie across the ground as evidence of the fighting. A wooden lattice building sits within the action, while green pine trees and a rocky outcrop anchor the edges. Olive green, tan, crimson and grey brown carry the figures and landscape against the gold, and the crowded arrangement keeps the eye moving from one clash to the next.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Hōgen and Heiji rebellions ended the imperial court's direct governance and marked the rise of the samurai as the dominant force in Japanese society. The screen records that shift, showing military authority pushing aside civil aristocracy at the close of the Heian period. Attributed to the 17th century and created during the height of the Edo period, the folding screen belongs to a tradition of narrative painting that preserved the memory of medieval conflicts and the origins of the warrior class, which the shogunate later inherited.

Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker takes the shape of its artwork, so the gold ground and the swordsmen's path become the sticker's edge. Placed on a laptop, journal or window, the piece reads as a fragment of the screen, a small record of a turning point in Japanese history for anyone who collects historical design.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v64-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788234152
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v64-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
