Gold dominates the surface, set against dark green hills, slate-grey and earth-brown streets, and dark teal rivers. Rows of rectangular rooftops anchor the city view, while tiny figures move through the streets and fields. The eye travels from the dense town at one end to open country at the other, with the small human figures carrying the story.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Hōgen rebellion (1156) and the Heiji rebellion (1160) were internal conflicts that broke the authority of the imperial court and carried the rising military families, most decisively the Taira and Minamoto clans, into power. The painting marks the close of Heian courtier society and the start of samurai rule that led to the shogunate. Made in the 17th century, under the Tokugawa peace, it reflects the period's appetite for warrior chronicles and for the classical and ancestral past, and it places these battles within a tradition of grand historical painting that validated the military elite.

Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker takes the shape of whatever it carries, so this design keeps the outline of its own scene, with the gold city and hills defining the edge of the piece. Its small scale rewards close looking, the way the screen's tiny figures reward anyone who leans in to find them. Each cut reads as a single fragment of the larger folding panorama, put to use on a single surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788235359
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
