A diagonal band of forest green cuts across the composition, dividing the warriors from the dense trees that fill the rest of the field. A vermilion torii gate stands out in red against the green and the pale cream ground. Within the scene, a mounted samurai on a white horse rides above armoured warriors on foot, and an archer draws his bow. A dark brown rectangular border frames the whole image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The screen commemorates the Hōgen Rebellion of 1156 and the Heiji Rebellion of 1160, rival clashes between aristocratic and samurai clans in the late Heian period. These wars broke the power of the imperial court and opened the way for the samurai-led government of the Kamakura shogunate. The mounted warrior, the archer and the armoured foot soldiers show the military force that replaced court authority. The torii gate marks the sacred setting in which these struggles unfolded. Screens like this one were made as decorative furnishings in the Edo period, and they carried these epic histories into the rooms where they were seen.

Cut to the Outline of Its Subject

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the artwork's shapes become the edge of the object. The green band, the red gate and the rider's silhouette can each define the cut line, turning the composition into a sticker that reads as a shaped piece rather than a rectangle. The design rewards close viewing, with its gold detail and small figures, and a sticker held at arm's length on a laptop lid or notebook lets the warriors and trees come through at the scale of a folding screen.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v139-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788128768
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v139-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
