Gold leaf catches the light behind the figures and sets the scene apart from the ground, while dark green, muted brown, pale grey and rust red build the landscape and the armour. Running warriors in combat dominate the foreground, and a figure with a bundled sack on its back moves among them. An archer or spearman with a bow stands out in the sequence, and a small boat sits at the river's edge, anchoring the narrative to water.

Meaning & Symbolism

The screen depicts the struggle between the Taira and Minamoto clans for control of the imperial court. These conflicts mark the point where court aristocrats gave way to the samurai class, and the violence of the rebellions ended the power of the civilian nobility and opened the era of military governance under the bakufu system. The painting turns chronicled war into a visual epic, with loyalty, betrayal and the cycle of power running through each episode. Its 17th-century making reflects the Edo period's taste for historical sagas and warrior legends, which decorated the residences of the elite.

Made for the Collector's Surface

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the warriors, the bow and the boat keep their silhouettes once they leave the page. The design's narrative rewards close looking, and a sticker places it at arm's length, where each figure can be read one at a time. Fans of Japanese history and screen painting can carry this sequence of battle onto a laptop, a journal or a notebook cover.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v138-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788128741
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v138-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
