Against it, a palace pavilion with a hipped roof sits in a rectangular block of architecture, with a wooden corridor and railing running beneath it. Courtiers are seated on the veranda, and a figure reclines on a mat, their quiet poses set apart from the action. At the top of the composition, armoured warriors draw bows. The palette moves through charcoal grey, olive green, pale wood tan and crimson red, and a brocade-style border frames the whole scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Hōgen Rebellion (1156) and the Heiji Rebellion (1160) were struggles between rival samurai clans and aristocratic factions for control of the imperial court in Kyoto. The two conflicts broke the court's authority and showed the samurai class taking political power for itself. The painting pairs the still pavilion below with the warriors above, so the court and the armed men who would overturn it occupy one scene. Screens of this kind were made as decorative furnishings for elite residences, and they recorded the martial history that legitimised the warrior elite.

Reading the Scene on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the artwork keeps the borders and silhouettes that structure the screen: the hipped roof, the railing, the arc of the archers. Each detail reads at close range, the way a folding screen is seen when viewed from a few paces. Placed on a notebook or a laptop lid, the piece becomes a small chamber of gold and courtly detail carrying one of the turning points of Japanese history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v137-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788235489
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v137-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
