Against it sit the strong accents of vermilion red and charcoal black, with dark green and pale wood tan grounding the architecture. The composition is built from a tiled-roof palace, a wooden railing and steps, and a veranda where nobles sit in observation. Below them move an ox-drawn carriage and a palanquin carried by attendants, while courtiers in court robes fill the lower registers. The Yamato-e style favours flat, layered planes over perspective, so each figure and structure reads clearly as its own shape.

Meaning & Symbolism

The painting records a turning point. The Hōgen and Heiji Rebellions ended the imperial court's dominance and brought the samurai class to the centre of political power, paving the way for the shogunate system that governed Japan for centuries. Its seventeenth-century makers looked back to this medieval past, linking the warrior class of their own time to the celebrated military lineages of the earlier Heian era. The courtly carriages and robes set beside the armoured conflict show the old order and the new power in one frame.

Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker takes its shape from the artwork itself, so the gold, vermilion and carriage silhouettes can define the edge of the sticker rather than sitting inside a rectangle. Set on a laptop, journal or notebook, the piece reads the way the screen was meant to be read: a scene seen up close, with each figure and roofline picked out against its surroundings.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v136-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788128712
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v136-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
