Dark teal and crimson red mark the armour and banners, and the figures cluster in close combat, archers drawn with bows, and warriors raising standards. A wooden bridge or walkway cuts across the lower field, leading the eye through the action. The style follows Yamato-e painting, where flat planes of colour and gilded space carry the narrative.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Hōgen and Heiji rebellions mark the moment the imperial court lost its grip on power and the samurai class rose to govern, the first warrior-led government in Japan. The screen turns that upheaval into legend, with its clashes and shifting loyalties recorded as chronicle. Produced in the Edo period, when elites prized martial heritage and cultural learning, it preserves medieval civil strife for later viewers through established pictorial conventions. Its scale on a folding screen let the artist treat the story as a grand architectural canvas.

Turning the Screen Into a Sticker

A folding screen is seen across a room, but this artwork is cut to its own outline and placed up close, where the gold, the banners and the drifting clouds read at a glance. Each sticker takes the shape of its chosen figure or cloud, so the dark water and the warriors become one clean silhouette on the surface it sits on, a small piece of samurai-era drama for a laptop, journal or notebook.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v126-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788235692
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-rebellions-of-the-hgen-and-heiji-eras-17th-century-v126-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
