A multi-armed goddess sits enthroned on a lotus at the centre, and the composition is held together by a crowd of crowned deities and attendants arranged on both sides of her. A lion sits near the goddess, marking her presence as a fierce protector. The palette is built on vermilion red, pale sand, sage green, navy and saffron orange, with the gouache colours laid in flat, luminous fields. A small numeral, 42, appears within the painting, identifying the leaf within its original series.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene belongs to the Markandeya Purana, and it depicts the episode in which the gods lend their strength to a single figure so that she can defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Durga is the result of that union, a goddess whose many arms carry the weapons of every deity. Her emergence signals the restoration of cosmic order over chaos. The painting was produced in the Punjab Hills and is associated with the Guler school, a court workshop tradition that flourished in the Himalayan foothills in the early nineteenth century, known for its lyrical handling of sacred texts.

Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker takes the shape of the image it carries, so this design is cut around the painted frame and reads as a single object rather than a flat rectangle. It suits smooth flat surfaces such as laptops and journals, where the goddess can be seen up close, her lotus throne and attendant crowd rewarding a second look. Collectors of Pahari painting and admirers of Hindu mythology will find the composition as sharp at small scale as the original leaf is on the page.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-creation-of-durga-page-from-a-dispersed-markandeya-purana-stories-of-the-sage-ca-181020-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788239335
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-creation-of-durga-page-from-a-dispersed-markandeya-purana-stories-of-the-sage-ca-181020-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
