The composition is organised around the collective effort of the churning, with the figures arranged across the leaf as a single narrative field. The restrained palette keeps attention on the linework and the intricate storytelling of the scene, which is characteristic of the court painting tradition it comes from.

Meaning & Symbolism

The painting illustrates the Samudra Manthan, the foundational Hindu myth in which gods and demons churn the primordial ocean with Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Their goal is to recover the lost treasures and amrita, the nectar of immortality. The act stands for the sustained exertion needed to draw life-sustaining truths from chaos, and the joint labour of opposing forces reflects the dual nature of the universe. The emergence of the sun, the moon and the elixir restores cosmic order. The work is attributed to the Mandi school in the Punjab Hills and dates to the late eighteenth century, a period of sustained output from the Mandi kingdom.

Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows the edge of its artwork, so the leaf format of this painting becomes the sticker itself, with nothing added around it. The design suits a flat surface where its rectangular outline can be read at a glance, and it rewards close looking, since the churning figures and the ocean's rising treasures reveal more the nearer the eye comes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-the-churning-of-the-ocean-of-milk-ca-178090-v3-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788126863
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-the-churning-of-the-ocean-of-milk-ca-178090-v3-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
