Two seated robed figures sit in quiet contrast to a group of riders in red and blue, the strongest accents in the scene. Dark blue, ochre brown and dark brown anchor the composition, while distant mountains recede behind the action and give the panel its depth.

Meaning & Symbolism

Shinkyoku was a dramatic performance tradition that captivated audiences during the transition into the early Edo period, and this screen records its storytelling in the formal language of elite decorative painting. The gold ground and clouds set the scene apart from the everyday, while the mounted riders carry the movement and spectacle of the drama. Created during the Momoyama and early Edo eras, the work links literary performance to visual mastery and shows how theatrical tropes were preserved through luxury screen painting.

On the Kiss-Cut Stickers

A folding screen is designed to be read across a room, panel by panel. This design takes the opposite approach: each sticker is cut to the outline of Takebun's scene, so the composition is seen up close as one self-contained image. The gold field and wave lines carry the eye around the cut edge, turning the sticker into a compact window onto the screen for collectors of Japanese theatre and folklore.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-takebun-from-the-musical-drama-the-new-piece-shinkyoku-early-17th-century-v6-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788110375
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-takebun-from-the-musical-drama-the-new-piece-shinkyoku-early-17th-century-v6-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
