Shaka sits at the centre, the largest and most central figure, while the two bodhisattvas stand at either side, establishing a symmetrical, hierarchical arrangement. The sixteen figures fill the surrounding space in measured rows, so the eye moves from the central teacher outward. The source sheet also carries printed black columns of Japanese characters, with the names of Tokyo and Osaka visible, giving the image a documentary, letterpress quality.

Meaning & Symbolism

Shaka is the historical founder of Buddhism, the teacher who reached full awakening and then shared the path out of suffering. The two bodhisattvas assist his teaching, embodying compassion and wisdom, while the sixteen revered elders represent the transmission of the dharma across generations. The arrangement expresses the wider cosmological order of the Buddhist pantheon. Created in the Kamakura or Nanbokuchō period, the work reflects an era shaped by Esoteric and Zen practice, when Japanese painters adapted continental techniques to local devotional needs. Scrolls like this were focal points for ritual, meditation and ancestral veneration in temples and monasteries.

Designed for the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the figures and their surrounding forms are cut close to the edge of the artwork rather than sitting inside a rectangle. The central Shaka becomes the focal point of the piece, with the attendant figures and rows of sixteen framing him. Because the sticker is applied flat and handled one piece at a time, the composition is read up close, detail by detail, in the way the original scroll was studied by those who worshipped before it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-shaka-shakyamuni-the-historical-buddha-with-two-attendant-bodhisattvas-and-sixteen-14th-century-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788244833
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-shaka-shakyamuni-the-historical-buddha-with-two-attendant-bodhisattvas-and-sixteen-14th-century-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
