Faded grey ink and sepia brown toning give the paper its aged character, and the woodblock-printed texture is visible in the strokes of every character. The open spread sits at the centre of the composition, so the columns of text read as the dominant structure, with the edges of the pages falling away into the parchment tone.

Meaning & Symbolism

The text originated as a Muromachi-period emaki, a hand-painted scroll, and this 1642 edition marks its move into print. The tale follows the setsuwa tradition, recounting the everyday experiences, quarrels and ironic situations of monks in a Buddhist monastery. Its humour works as social critique, setting the ascetic ideals of religious life against worldly behaviour. Framed as a long autumn night, the story joins serious monastic discourse with popular folklore, and the book itself stands as an Edo-period record of growing literacy among the general public.

Reading the Sticker as an Object of the Page

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to its own outline, so this open spread lifts cleanly off its backing and sits on a surface as a single printed page. It suits journals, notebooks and laptops, where a book image belongs, and the cut edge follows the page shape so the artwork reads as a leaf of the book it depicts.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-printed-book-of-the-text-for-a-long-tale-for-an-autumn-night-aki-no-yo-no-nagamonogatari-dated-1642-v25-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788121783
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-printed-book-of-the-text-for-a-long-tale-for-an-autumn-night-aki-no-yo-no-nagamonogatari-dated-1642-v25-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
