Black ink defines the contours, cream tones open the background, and gold accents catch the light at the edges. A calligraphic inscription panel sits beside the figure, its rectangular block balancing the vertical sweep of the scroll and giving the composition its structure.

Meaning & Symbolism

Jion Daishi, also known as Kuiji, was a foundational patriarch of the Hossō sect of East Asian Buddhism and a close disciple of the pilgrim and translator Xuanzang. He carried Yogācāra teachings from China to Japan, and portraits of such figures served temples as focal points for veneration, meditation and lineage. Showing him standing, calm and upright, presents him as a pillar of scholarly devotion and the living link between master and later practitioners. The Kamakura period, when portraiture of clergy reached new levels of naturalism, produced works like this one in ink and colour on silk.

Cut to the Figure

Kiss-cut vinyl follows the artwork's own outline, so the sticker takes the shape of the scroll and monk rather than a plain rectangle. That makes it a natural fit for smooth, flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where the portrait reads as a single, uninterrupted image. Its vertical form suits the narrow spaces where a hanging scroll would have been viewed up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-portrait-of-jion-daishi-guiji-14th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788121376
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-portrait-of-jion-daishi-guiji-14th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
