Against it, crowds of robed figures move through a landscape of tiled-roof buildings and pine trees, while a red palanquin stands out as the strongest accent. Birds in flight cross the upper field, and the palette stays disciplined: white, black, green and red set against the gold. The composition reads from left to right, as a handscroll is meant to be read.

Meaning & Symbolism

The painting belongs to the Phantom Genji Scrolls, a series built on the Tale of Genji, the Heian-era court novel. The title's “Aoi” refers to the chapter centred on Lady Aoi, whose quarrel with Genji's lover over viewing places at the Kamo festival turns on the procession and the carriages that carry courtly rank. The red palanquin and the crowds of attendants carry that story into the image. Painters of the Edo period returned to Genji as an idealised aristocratic past, and these scrolls use its shifting fortunes to meditate on memory, longing and the impermanence of human relationships, themes that sit comfortably beside Buddhist thought.

Designed to Be Cut to Its Own Edge

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of whatever it depicts, so the figures, roofs and clouds of this scroll define the sticker's silhouette rather than sitting inside a rectangle. The horizontal format of the original handscroll translates into a sticker that reads as a single unrolled moment, and the gold ground keeps the scene's glow intact wherever it is placed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-leaves-of-wild-ginger-aoi-from-the-phantom-genji-scrolls-maboroshi-no-genji-mid-17th-century-v9-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788110262
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-leaves-of-wild-ginger-aoi-from-the-phantom-genji-scrolls-maboroshi-no-genji-mid-17th-century-v9-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
