Vermilion and ochre pick out robes and details against the ink-grey linework. Tiered circular canopies and tiered jewelled trees structure the space, while a celestial musician plays a lute, a robed attendant holds a fan, and a seated figure at lower left plays a flute-like instrument. The figures are arranged in sequence, so the eye moves across the scene the way a scroll unrolls.

Meaning & Symbolism

This is an engi emaki, a Japanese genre of narrative handscroll that records the origins of a religious institution. The scrolls follow Michizane from his career at the imperial court through his exile and death. After his death his spirit was blamed for disasters at court, and the imperial family established Kitano Tenjin Shrine to appease him. The celestial figures and jewelled trees mark that transformation from a wronged man into a protective deity, a symbol of justice and scholarship. The work was made in the Kamakura period by anonymous professional workshops and remains a cornerstone of medieval Japanese narrative painting.

Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker is cut around its own edge while the backing stays whole, so the artwork can follow the contours of its figures and clouds rather than sitting in a rectangle. The layered canopies and drifting bodhisattvas suit that treatment, and the shape of the sticker becomes part of the composition. Its small scale means it is read up close, where the musicians and fan-bearing attendant can be seen one by one, the way a pilgrim or scholar would have studied the original scroll.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-illustrated-legends-of-the-kitano-tenjin-shrine-kitano-tenjin-engi-emaki-late-13th-century-v45-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788114494
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-illustrated-legends-of-the-kitano-tenjin-shrine-kitano-tenjin-engi-emaki-late-13th-century-v45-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
