A checkered floor of diagonal panels runs beneath the figures, and rectangular panels divide the courtly interior into readable zones. Four figures anchor the composition: a seated courtier playing a koto-like string instrument, a seated woman in a long robe with a fan at lower right, a lidded incense burner, and a woman with a folding screen at the left edge. The horizontal scroll format pulls the eye across the scene from one figure to the next, as the handscroll was meant to be unrolled.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Heartvine chapter centres on Lady Aoi, who is possessed by the living spirit of the resentful Lady Rokujo. The scene turns on jealousy, obsession, and the karmic cost of courtly rivalry, and it expresses the Buddhist concept of impermanence and the suffering that comes with human attachment. Scrolls like this were part of the elite culture of the period, serving as literary education and as displays of aristocratic refinement in the Tosa school and the yamato-e painting tradition.

Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows the contours of its artwork, so the figures, screen and floor panels read as one shape rather than a framed rectangle. Like the scroll itself, the design rewards close looking, with the courtiers and their props revealed one detail at a time. It suits collectors of classical Japanese literature and anyone who keeps Heian-era subjects close at hand.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-heartvine-aoi-chapter-from-the-tale-of-genji-genji-monogatari-16th-century-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788113158
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-heartvine-aoi-chapter-from-the-tale-of-genji-genji-monogatari-16th-century-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
