Against it, tan architecture, dark brown roofs and palace pavilions sit within moss-green and pine-green landscapes. Courtly figures move through the scenes, and an ox-drawn cart travels a procession over the hills. Pine trees and flowering plum trees mark the seasons and frame the panels, so the eye reads the composition as a continuous sequence rather than a single image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Tale of Genji was written in the eleventh century and is attributed to Murasaki Shikibu. Its story follows the shining prince Hikaru Genji through court life, romance and loss. The screen's fifty-four scenes trace the epic's turning points, while the gold ground and the blossoming and fading trees express mono no aware, the awareness of impermanence that runs through the text. The work reflects the Edo period's sustained interest in classical court themes.

Cut to Its Own Outline

A folding screen is meant to be read across its panels, and this artwork carries that reading onto a small object. Because the sticker is cut to the outline of its own composition, the scenes sit as a self-contained sequence, with the gold clouds and framing trees defining the edge. It suits fans of classical Japanese literature who want the Genji narrative as a compact, detailed piece of art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-fifty-four-scenes-from-the-tale-of-genji-late-17th-century-v6-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788111758
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-fifty-four-scenes-from-the-tale-of-genji-late-17th-century-v6-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
