Figures are rendered with deliberate, spare strokes that emphasize gesture and posture, set against the negative space typical of period scroll architecture. The visual weight rests on the interplay between the dense, dark ink of the text columns and the fluid, illustrative silhouettes of the central figures, creating a balanced tension between the written word and the iconic imagery of the Devadatta chapter.

Meaning & Symbolism

The imagery centers on the theological transformation of Devadatta, a figure frequently cast as a villain in Buddhist literature but reclaimed in the Lotus Sutra as a catalyst for the Buddha's enlightenment. By illustrating this chapter, the artist engages with the radical inclusivity of the text, which asserts that even those traditionally considered corrupt possess the potential for Buddhahood. This 12th-century depiction serves as both a devotional object and a visual record of a transformative shift in Mahayana philosophy, grounding the cosmic significance of the sutra in the tangible, human-focused art of the era.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

As a kiss-cut decal, this intricate historical art is isolated from the clutter of its original scroll format. The die-cut boundary follows the precise contours of the manuscript’s silhouette, allowing these ancient figures to occupy modern surfaces as a singular, detached graphic element. This presentation turns a complex, multi-layered literary scroll into a compact, singular icon that functions independently of the text, emphasizing the strength of the original line work when removed from its archival context.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-devadatta-chapter-12-of-the-lotus-sutra-hoke-ky-daibadatta-bon-12th-century-v8-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788319175
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-devadatta-chapter-12-of-the-lotus-sutra-hoke-ky-daibadatta-bon-12th-century-v8-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
