Columns of Chinese characters run vertically down a horizontal rectangular scroll, each column evenly spaced and set against a field of indigo. Black provides the structure and contrast for the calligraphy, and the gold ink gives the whole sheet the glow of illuminated sutra production. The text itself is the ornament: the rhythm of the columns and the density of the strokes carry the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The chapter is Daibadatta-bon, the Devadatta chapter, and it centres on a figure usually cast as an antagonist in Buddhist tradition. The sutra reverses that expectation, declaring that Devadatta will attain buddhahood. That teaching of universal salvation is the heart of the Mahayana position it expresses: awakening is open to every being, whatever their past actions. Copying the scripture by hand was itself a devotional act, and the aristocratic and monastic communities of Heian Japan revered the Lotus Sutra above most others.

Why This Works as a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the gold columns and the scroll edge become the shape of the object. Each piece is a single, self-contained page of sacred text that can be placed where a collector wants to see it. The vinyl adheres to smooth flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, bringing a twelfth-century devotional manuscript into everyday reach.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-devadatta-chapter-12-of-the-lotus-sutra-hoke-ky-daibadatta-bon-12th-century-v15-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788109827
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-devadatta-chapter-12-of-the-lotus-sutra-hoke-ky-daibadatta-bon-12th-century-v15-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
