A seated Buddha haloed in gold sits among attendant figures, set against gold clouds and rocky mountains. A multi-tiered pagoda rises in the landscape, and vertical columns of text run through the image in the manner of a horizontal handscroll. A rectangular frontispiece panel frames the scene, so the artwork reads as a deliberate sequence of text and picture rather than a single illustration.

Meaning & Symbolism

Devadatta is a cousin and historical antagonist of the Buddha, and the chapter's central claim is that even a figure who committed grave transgressions can receive a prediction of ultimate awakening. That idea sits at the heart of the Lotus Sutra, one of the most influential scriptures in Mahayana Buddhism. The scroll comes from the Heian period, when Japanese monastic workshops combined refined calligraphy with painted imagery. Handscrolls of this kind were made to be venerated and to carry the aspirations of the patrons who commissioned them.

Reading the Gold on Indigo

A sticker is cut to its own outline, so the frontispiece frame, the halo and the mountain silhouettes can each set the edge of the piece. The gold-on-indigo contrast suits a close view: the scroll was made to be read at hand's length, and this object is applied and looked at the same way. Placed on a laptop, journal or window, it keeps the scripture's gold-and-indigo palette in everyday sight.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-devadatta-chapter-12-of-the-lotus-sutra-hoke-ky-daibadatta-bon-12th-century-v14-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788109002
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-devadatta-chapter-12-of-the-lotus-sutra-hoke-ky-daibadatta-bon-12th-century-v14-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
