The scene is arranged as a horizontal strip and also appears as a detail crop, so the eye moves across a crowded field of figures. A white elephant, a rooster, a turtle, a coiled white snake, a rat or mouse, a weasel-like animal and a tiger paw each occupy their own small pocket of the composition, and nothing in the layout competes with the reclining Buddha at its centre.

Meaning & Symbolism

The gathering of mourners, from grieving human disciples to weeping animals, signals the reach of the Buddha's teaching across every kind of being. Within the Buddhist understanding of this moment, the death is not simply a loss but the ultimate transcendence of earthly suffering and the cycle of rebirth, so the sorrow on display is paired with the teaching of impermanence and the Buddha's own settled peace. The work comes from the Muromachi period of Japan and blends imported Chinese painting traditions with Japanese Buddhist devotion. Scrolls of this genre were commissioned and displayed in temples during annual memorial ceremonies for the Buddha's death.

Crafted for the Collector's Surface

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to the outline of its own design, so the scroll's crowd of animals and mourners lands on the surface as a single, self-contained shape. Each figure keeps its place against the olive ground, and the piece carries a 15th-century devotional image into a context of personal collecting, where it sits on a laptop, journal or notebook as a small memorial to the Buddha's passing.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unknown-death-of-the-historical-buddha-nehan-zu-15th-century-v39-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788108350
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unknown-death-of-the-historical-buddha-nehan-zu-15th-century-v39-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
