Dusky rose and pale cream soften the face and the background. The seated soldier holds the kepi on his knee, its eagle badge and lettering turned toward the viewer, and the chevron stripes on his sleeve mark his rank. The rounded window frame and the rectangular case around the picture give the photograph its period form, a tintype or ambrotype with a quiet, close composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The kepi is the emblem of the soldier's unit, Company B of the 15th New Hampshire Volunteers, and the badge and lettering on it record the regiment he served in. The chevrons show his rank as a corporal in the Union Army. Portraits like this were made for families and for the men themselves, and they preserve the regimental identity and the dignity of an ordinary soldier of the Civil War.

A Regimental Kepi on a Sticker

The kepi and the seated figure form a compact group, so a die-cut sticker can follow the outline of the soldier and his cap to keep the regimental emblem at the centre of the piece. Its sepia and gold tones suit a quiet, historical image on a journal, a notebook or a laptop lid, where the badge and the chevrons can be read up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-soldier-in-union-corporals-uniform-holding-company-b-15th-new-hampshire-volunteers-kepi-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-25492718430780808865-front.webp?v=1790349097
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-soldier-in-union-corporals-uniform-holding-company-b-15th-new-hampshire-volunteers-kepi-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
