The figure stands upright at the centre, with the rifle held at his side and the cross-body strap and cartridge box belt crossing the coat. The gilt scalloped frame and the rectangular case give the image the formal outline of a period portrait, and the soft tonal shading keeps the whole scene quiet and serious.

Meaning & Symbolism

The soldier's uniform, cap box and weapons document the equipment of the American Civil War era, when the tintype was a common way to record a serving man. The portrait is a straightforward record of military dress and accoutrement rather than a symbolic allegory. Its value lies in the detail of the kit, which is why it reads as a historical study of the period.

Cut to the Figure

A die-cut sticker can follow the outline of the figure or the scalloped frame, so the soldier's silhouette sits cleanly on the surface it is applied to. The sepia tones hold their character at this scale, and the detail of the belt, the rifle and the cap is easiest to see when the sticker is looked at up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-soldier-in-confederate-frock-coat-and-forage-cap-with-cap-box-bayoneted-musket-and-holstered-revolver-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-92890970155422357704-front.webp?v=1790391089
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-soldier-in-confederate-frock-coat-and-forage-cap-with-cap-box-bayoneted-musket-and-holstered-revolver-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
