Beside him, the rugged features of the Luohan provide a textural contrast to the more stylized, refined appearance of the Heavenly King. The composition is populated by a series of boys, whose smaller scale and dynamic placements create a sense of depth and layered narrative. The color palette emphasizes rich, earth-toned pigments characteristic of the period, with delicate line work defining the ornate robes and the subtle expressions of the diverse assembly.

Iconographic Significance

This piece functions as a classic example of Buddhist devotional art from the early 17th century. The presence of the Luohan—the enlightened disciples—signifies the transmission of Buddhist teachings, while the Heavenly King serves as a protector of the dharma. The inclusion of boys, often interpreted as acolytes or symbols of auspicious youth, adds a layer of humanity and continuity to the divine assembly. Together, these figures represent a complete microcosm of the Buddhist cosmos, reflecting the era's focus on structured, multi-figure narrative paintings designed to instruct and inspire reverence.

The Artwork in Form

As a kiss-cut design, this intricate historical tableau is liberated from a standard rectangular border. The die-cut follows the organic silhouettes of the figures and the surrounding space, allowing the complex arrangement of the Luohan, the King, and the attendants to stand out as a singular, shaped icon. By mirroring the contours of the original masterwork, the sticker transforms a centuries-old painting into a distinct, portable graphic that holds its own shape on any flat, smooth surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-artist-shakyamuni-with-luohan-heavenly-king-and-boys-early-17th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788383519
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-artist-shakyamuni-with-luohan-heavenly-king-and-boys-early-17th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
