Ochre brown and grey set the ground, while a gold brocade border frames the whole leaf and gives it the formal weight of a court object. The painting is rendered in traditional ink and colour on silk, and its restraint lies in the stillness of the figure and the clean division between image and frame. Vertical inscriptions run beside the portrait. They read 南宋高宗真像, identifying the sitter as Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song, and a second line names him as a son of Emperor Huizong and records his reign and era name.

Meaning & Symbolism

Works like this belonged to a tradition of imperial portraiture in which images of rulers carried political legitimacy and ancestral veneration. The sequence of leaves in the original album traces the emperors of successive dynasties, so each portrait reinforces the Mandate of Heaven: the throne endures even as dynasties rise and fall. This example is attributed to an unidentified artist of the early twentieth century, and it reflects the period's sustained interest in preserving dynastic records. Its role was pedagogical and commemorative, a visual chronicle of who held the state.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the gold border and the red-robed figure can be read as a single shape rather than a card placed on a surface. The design's vertical panel suits the flat, upright surfaces of laptops, journals and windows, where the portrait can be seen up close, as a leaf is held in the hand.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-artist-portraits-of-emperors-of-successive-dynasties-early-20th-century-v19-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-front.webp?v=1788059463
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-artist-portraits-of-emperors-of-successive-dynasties-early-20th-century-v19-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
