Inside, the ruler appears in a vermilion-red robe and a black two-tiered cap, set against ochre brown and grey tones. Gold and black accents draw the eye to the face and headwear. Two lines of inscription run within the leaf: 宋哲宗真像 (true portrait of Emperor Zhezong of Song) and 帝名煦神宗之六子在位十五年號元祐, which records that he was the sixth son of Shenzong, reigned fifteen years, and used the era name Yuanyou.

Meaning & Symbolism

Imperial portraits of this kind served as visual records of sovereignty. The formal robe and cap signal rank, and the inscribed leaf anchors the likeness to a named ruler and reign, turning the image into a historical document as well as a portrait. Emperor Zhezong ruled the Northern Song dynasty in the late eleventh century, and the series this leaf belongs to traces a lineage of successive rulers. Painted on silk in ink and colour, the work reflects the long Chinese tradition of honouring past emperors as moral exemplars and as reminders of how dynasties rise and fall.

On the Kiss-Cut Stickers

Each kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the gold-bordered panel and the figure within it read as one clean shape rather than a rectangle on a backing. The design suits a flat surface that rewards close looking, such as a laptop lid, a journal cover, or a desk accessory, and it sits well indoors among books and objects that invite a second glance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-artist-portraits-of-emperors-of-successive-dynasties-early-20th-century-v16-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788059279
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-artist-portraits-of-emperors-of-successive-dynasties-early-20th-century-v16-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
