The palette runs from ochre brown and grey to deep black, with gold reserved for a brocade border that frames the figure like a textile mount. The inscription sits within the composition: 宋真宗真像, the portrait of Song Zhenzong, and beneath it a note that names him as the third son of Taizong, who reigned for twenty-five years under the era name Jingde. The painting is traditional ink and colour on silk, and the restraint of its layout keeps the face and the inscription in equal focus.

Meaning & Symbolism

Each leaf in the series presents a ruler as a link in an unbroken line of succession. The portraits operate within the idea of the Mandate of Heaven, the belief that imperial authority was granted by heaven and could be judged by the continuity of the state. Cataloguing sovereigns this way made the lineage itself the message, a record of ordered rule meant to instruct as much as to honour. The painter remains unidentified, consistent with court-style work where the historical record mattered more than the maker's name.

On the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of the artwork, so the gold border and the figure's silhouette become the object's edge rather than a rectangle around it. The inscription and the robe read as a single cut shape, which suits a piece that was built around one figure and one label. Placed on a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window, the portrait carries the same deliberate framing it had on silk.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-artist-portraits-of-emperors-of-successive-dynasties-early-20th-century-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788059145
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-artist-portraits-of-emperors-of-successive-dynasties-early-20th-century-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
