Bold, primary-heavy palettes define the faces, with high-contrast black line work outlining the almond-shaped eyes and exaggerated brow structures. Each portrait functions as a singular graphic unit, characterized by sweeping, symmetrical curves and symbolic color blocks that create a dense, rhythmic visual field. The layout retains the vintage aesthetic of the original archival illustrations, preserving the weathered integrity and historical texture of the source material while isolating the figures for modern visual impact.

Meaning & Symbolism

In Peking opera, these lianpu designs function as a visual shorthand for the audience, communicating a character’s personality, moral alignment, and social status before a single word is spoken. Red represents loyalty and bravery, white signifies craftiness or guile, and gold denotes divinity or supernatural power. By drawing from a turn-of-the-century collection, this design preserves a moment in performance history where these masks were the primary vehicle for storytelling. The portraits represent a bridge between rigorous artistic tradition and the populist energy of the theater, capturing the theatrical grit of the Qing dynasty’s final years.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Because this sticker is cut precisely to the outline of the chosen portrait, the complex, swirling details of the makeup patterns are granted a sharp, defined edge. This format allows the intricate linework of the lianpu to stand out against any smooth, flat surface. By stripping away the background, the design transforms a historical archival print into a standalone graphic icon, allowing you to isolate a specific character and apply it as a focused, singular mark of interest on your journals, laptops, or interior surfaces.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-artist-one-hundred-portraits-of-peking-opera-characters-late-19thearly-20th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788404730
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-artist-one-hundred-portraits-of-peking-opera-characters-late-19thearly-20th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
