Pine trees cling to rock outcrops, and a wooden walkway runs along the face of a cliff, guiding the eye through the scene rather than across a flat plane. Mass sits in the stone and foliage while open silk and water lines hold the quiet between them. There is no text or numeral in the composition, so the image carries itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

Painted during the Ming or Qing dynasty, this album leaf belongs to a tradition in which landscape stood for an inner state rather than a survey of places. The bridge, pavilion and walkway mark human presence as modest and integrated into the natural world, a visual statement of the Daoist ideal of withdrawing from public life to find balance in nature. Works like this were shared among literati, the scholar-official class who saw the wild landscape as a source of wisdom and moral steadiness. The artist is unidentified, a reminder of how many professional and amateur painters worked in late imperial China. The piece is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Cut to the Shape of the Scene

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the cliffs, bridge and pavilion can be the edge of the object itself rather than a rectangle around them. The horizontal scroll rhythm reads naturally on a flat surface, where the image can be seen at close range, the way an album leaf was meant to be studied up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-artist-landscape-unknown-v9-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788441867
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-artist-landscape-unknown-v9-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
