Deep green-grey and antique gold carry the most weight, while the pale rose of the skin and the crimson accents hold the eye at the centre. A crystal orb rests in the right hand and a tall staff rises in the left, and the jewelled necklace and armlets catch the gold tones. The painting is rendered in mineral colours on silk, so the surface reads as layered and quiet rather than flat.

Meaning & Symbolism

Kshitigarbha, known in Korean as Jijang Bosal, is traditionally shown as a monk rather than in the ornate vestments of other bodhisattvas. He is revered for a vow to delay his own enlightenment until every soul has been freed from the hell realms, which made him a central protector of the deceased and a source of mercy in the afterlife. The wish-granting jewel and the monk's staff stand for his power to light the underworld and guide beings toward liberation. The work comes from the Goryeo dynasty, when the state and aristocracy commissioned sophisticated religious icons, and it is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its maker is unidentified, but the gold application and silk craftsmanship place it firmly within fourteenth-century court style.

Why It Works on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its artwork, so the halo, staff and orb define the shape that meets the surface. The figure is seen up close, as a single image lifted from its scroll and set on a laptop, journal or notebook where it can be read at arm's length. Collectors of Buddhist art and fans of Korean heritage will recognise the iconography at once, and the compact format keeps the gold and rose tones intact.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-artist-kshitigarbha-first-half-of-the-14th-century-v3-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788443278
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-artist-kshitigarbha-first-half-of-the-14th-century-v3-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
