Deep blue dominates the ground, while off-white robes, vermilion red and ochre yellow mark out the figures. The ox-headed, dog-headed, horse-headed and bird-headed figures repeat in orderly succession, and a blue-faced, lion-like mask gives the composition its sharpest focal point. A paper border frames the whole, and the numeral 52.14.1 appears in the image as a catalogue reference.

Meaning & Symbolism

In Chinese thought, constellations were integral to cosmology, astrology and calendrical systems. They were read for divination and as omens, linking earthly events to the movements of the heavens, and even imperial legitimacy rested partly on such readings. Painted in the late 17th century, a period bridging the Ming and early Qing dynasties, this series shows how cosmological painting continued its established conventions through dynastic change. The artist remains anonymous, but the work reflects a skilled hand and the enduring place of celestial themes in Chinese art.

Cut to the Outline of the Sky

A kiss-cut sticker follows whatever outline you choose, so this design can be isolated to a single robed figure, the blue mask, or the full tiered panel. Each cut keeps the vermilion and ochre accents intact against the deep blue, turning a scroll-like composition into a compact object for a laptop, notebook or collection of favourite things.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/unidentified-artist-fourteen-constellations-late-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788038991
https://thestickerspace.com/products/unidentified-artist-fourteen-constellations-late-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
