The composition is defined by the tension between the dense, textured needles of the pine and the soft, expansive petals of the peonies, creating a balance between structure and softness. Hokkei utilizes a decorative, layered layout that emphasizes the naturalistic forms, keeping the subjects tightly focused to highlight the interplay between the regal bird and its botanical backdrop.

Historical Significance

Originating from the Three Sheets (Mihira no uchi) series, this piece acts as a window into the Edo period’s fascination with nature. In traditional Japanese motifs, the pine represents longevity and resilience, while the peony is synonymous with prosperity and honor. The peacock serves as a symbol of beauty and dignity. Together, these elements reflect the mid-19th-century aesthetic priority of capturing the harmonious relationship between fauna and seasonal flora, rooting the design in a long-standing tradition of Japanese visual poetry.

Applied to the Sticker

As a kiss-cut decal, the intricate outline of the peacock and its trailing plumage is liberated from the surrounding rectangular space. This format allows the complex silhouette of the foliage to exist as an independent graphic, effectively turning a historical woodblock-style print into a contoured object that sits cleanly against the surface of a journal cover or laptop lid.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/totoya-hokkei-peacock-on-pine-tree-and-peonies-from-the-series-three-sheets-mihira-no-uchi-mid-1810s-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TTYHKK-2X2-49-front.webp?v=1789259549
https://thestickerspace.com/products/totoya-hokkei-peacock-on-pine-tree-and-peonies-from-the-series-three-sheets-mihira-no-uchi-mid-1810s-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
