Black picks out the cap, belt and weapons. The composition follows the format of a cased portrait: a rectangular gilt border around an inner frame with an oval-arched top, centring the figure. The surface carries the soft, tinted quality of a photographic portrait from the 1860s.

Meaning & Symbolism

The portrait belongs to the American Civil War and records a soldier of Company G in the 1st (Farinholt's) Virginia Infantry Battalion Reserves. The pistol and knife are placed as part of his military identity, and the cap, sword and belt confirm his service. Period portraits like this one were made to be kept and handed down, so the image works as a family-held record of the man and his unit.

Cut to the Shape of the Portrait

A die-cut sticker follows the edge of the artwork, so the framed figure becomes a shape of its own. Its tinted grey and sepia tones suit the flat surface of a laptop, journal or notebook, where the detail of the uniform and weapons reads clearly up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/theophilus-mann-of-company-g-1st-farinholts-virginia-infantry-battalion-reserves-with-pistol-and-knife-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-16871483719048329436-front.webp?v=1790403454
https://thestickerspace.com/products/theophilus-mann-of-company-g-1st-farinholts-virginia-infantry-battalion-reserves-with-pistol-and-knife-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
