Rich, mineral-heavy ink tones define the lush, over-sized leaves, while the blossoms are treated with a delicate, layered application that emphasizes their soft, ruffled edges. The arrangement is purposefully asymmetrical, drawing the eye in a serpentine path from the dense, dark foliage at the base up to the lighter, ethereal petals reaching toward the top of the frame, creating a sense of organic movement that defies the static nature of the original screen format.

Meaning & Symbolism

Emerging from the vibrant cultural landscape of Edo-period Japan, these blooms serve as a quintessential example of the Kachō-ga tradition, which celebrates the poetic beauty of birds and flowers. Hollyhocks were frequently imbued with connotations of endurance and nobility, but in Sōtatsu’s hands, they become a study in seasonal transition and the fleeting aesthetic of the natural world. By isolating these botanical figures from their original multi-panel context, the design preserves the intentional simplicity and reverence for craftsmanship that defined the Rinpa movement’s contribution to Japanese art history.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

By stripping away the gold-leaf background of the original screen, the kiss-cut format allows the botanical silhouettes to define their own territory. Because the sticker is cut precisely to the outline of the foliage and petals, it transforms a historical masterpiece into a floating, modular graphic that sits flush against the surface of a laptop or journal, effectively bringing a piece of 17th-century mastery into a contemporary, tactile space.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/tawaraya-statsu-white-hollyhocks-17th-century-v3-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788476736
https://thestickerspace.com/products/tawaraya-statsu-white-hollyhocks-17th-century-v3-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
