White margins frame the scene, and the layout reads as a rectangular album page, with vertical panels of calligraphy running alongside the portrait. Floral patterning in the background softens the edges, while the inscribed characters 右 and 伊勢 mark the page with the names that identify the sitter and his verse.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Thirty-six Poetic Immortals, known in Japan as the Sanjūrokkasen, are the canonical masters of waka poetry, and this album pairs each portrait with an example of the poet's work. The format joins painting and classical calligraphy into one cultural record, so that the image and the verse carry the same weight. Gukei worked in the Yamato-e tradition, painting in ink and colour on silk or paper, and his album preserves court taste and classical learning for later generations. The inscription 伊勢 points to the poetess Ise, one of the immortals named in the sequence.

Designed to Be Cut to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows the contour of its artwork, so the seated noble and the album's framing lines become a shape of their own rather than a rectangle. Because the figure is the focal point, the cut keeps his silhouette intact, and the calligraphy panels read as a sequence of fine vertical strokes. The sticker carries the album page as a single object, which suits a collector who wants the Edo-period portrait and its poetry on a surface they choose.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v71-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788015531
https://thestickerspace.com/products/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v71-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
