The layout is built from rectangular leaves and vertical panels, so the eye moves down the image the way a reader moves down a column of text. Floral patterning fills the surrounding field, and a single character, 太, appears among the written panels.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Thirty-six Poetic Immortals were chosen by the courtier Fujiwara no Kintō during the Heian period, and each was honoured with a portrait paired with a poem. Waka verse sat at the centre of aristocratic life, so the series joins image and poetry into one act of record. Sumiyoshi Gukei, working in the Sumiyoshi school during the Edo period, drew these figures in traditional Yamato-e technique, placing each poet within a formal framework that keeps them fixed for later generations to study and admire.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the court lady and the album's panels stand as a single shape on whatever surface they meet. The separate panels read as distinct units, which suits a composition built from discrete leaves. For collectors of Edo-period painting, this piece condenses a canonical poetry anthology into one image that carries its own poem with it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v67-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788529766
https://thestickerspace.com/products/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v67-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
