A figure in a pale green robe and black cap sits at the centre of a rectangular leaf, with soft beige and cream grounds surrounding him. Black ink carries the strongest contrast, defining the poet's features and the calligraphy that fills the vertical panels beside him. A small character, 右, marks the page's orientation, a reminder that this is a folding album read in sequence. Its painting follows the Japanese ink and colour tradition, with a floral pattern running through its quieter passages.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Thirty-six Poetic Immortals were a group of poets selected in the Heian period, and each was regarded as an exemplar of courtly refinement. Pairing every figure with a representative waka poem links the image to the written word, the form that defined aristocratic identity and cultural devotion. Sumiyoshi Gukei, active in the seventeenth century, worked in the Yamato-e style and produced this album during the early Edo period, preserving classical courtly painting for later generations.

Cut to the Outline of a Single Poet

A kiss-cut sticker takes its shape from the artwork itself, so the seated noble can be lifted out of his rectangular leaf and placed as a figure in his own right. The cut follows his robe and cap rather than a border, which makes the portrait read as an object, much like a single page lifted from the album. Collectors of Japanese classical painting will recognise the poem-and-portrait pairing that defines the original work.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v63-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788529861
https://thestickerspace.com/products/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v63-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
