The subject is depicted in formal court attire, their posture reflecting the rigid etiquette of the Heian period. Surrounding the portrait, precise calligraphic characters flow vertically, creating a rhythmic balance between the negative space of the page and the dense, rhythmic strokes of the poetry. The palette remains restrained, utilizing earthy pigments and muted tones that prioritize the expressive power of the brushwork over decorative excess.

Historical Significance

These figures represent the Sanjūrokkasen, or the Thirty-six Poetic Immortals, a group of Japanese masters selected by the poet Fujiwara no Kintō. Sumiyoshi Gukei’s adaptation honors the lineage of the Tosa school, reviving the aesthetic of earlier eras to memorialize these literary icons. By isolating this specific immortal, the design preserves the reverence held for those who defined the canon of waka poetry, transforming a piece of historical manuscript art into a focused study of period fashion and literary heritage.

The Sticker Form

Because this design is rendered as a kiss-cut sticker, the complex, organic silhouette of the historical figure is preserved in the final cut. The outline follows the intricacies of the robes and the seated form, allowing the artwork to exist as a self-contained window into 17th-century aesthetics. This format treats the classical portrait as a graphic icon, ready to be placed on flat indoor surfaces where the fine detail of the brushwork remains clearly visible to the eye.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v61-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788529893
https://thestickerspace.com/products/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v61-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
