Ink and colour painting sets the palette of beige, cream and white ground against black and red accents. A seated court noble in a black robe and black eboshi cap anchors the scene, while a courtier holding a red-tipped fan adds a sharp point of colour. Calligraphy panels run alongside the images, so the poem and the portrait read as one unit.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Thirty-six Poetic Immortals were selected by the courtier Fujiwara no Kintō, and the album preserves their identities as the canon of Japanese verse from the Heian period. Their elevation to near-divine status in aristocratic culture gives each portrait a sense of formal reverence. The pairing of image and waka expresses the view that refined language and the mastery of expression carry spiritual weight. Attributed to Sumiyoshi Gukei, a prominent painter of the late seventeenth century, the work shows how Edo artists turned to their literary heritage and recorded it with traditional care.

Made for the Sticker Cut

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of its own artwork, so the figure, fan and calligraphy panel sit on the surface as they do on the page. The cut lines define each motif as a single shape, which suits a design built from distinct panels and one central figure. Placed on a notebook, laptop or journal, the sticker carries a compact piece of the album's record of the poets.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v47-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788530302
https://thestickerspace.com/products/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v47-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
