The style is ink calligraphy on paper, so the brushwork carries the image: the poet's robes and features are drawn in fluid, economical strokes, and the poem sits beside the figure as a second block of ink. Inscriptions including 大中臣, 朝臣 and 右 mark the names and ranks written into the composition. The folding-panel format sets the portrait and the verse as two halves of one spread.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Thirty-six Poetic Immortals form a canon of master bards established in the classical era, and they were often honoured almost as tutelary deities of literature. Gukei belonged to the Edo-period revival of Yamato-e, the native Japanese painting tradition that looked back to court art for its models. Placing a likeness beside a classical verse expresses the Japanese ideal in which text and image inform and elevate each other, pairing aesthetic sensitivity with a sense of spiritual depth.

Cut to the Outline of Its Subject

A kiss-cut sticker follows the exact outline of the artwork it carries, so this design is cut around the figure and its calligraphy rather than left as a plain rectangle. The result works on smooth flat surfaces such as laptops and journals, where the portrait can sit like a small leaf from the album itself. Its scale and close viewing distance suit the intimate, page-like character of the original.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v37-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788530554
https://thestickerspace.com/products/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v37-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
