The artist employs a restrained palette that mimics the aged parchment and mineral pigments of the original 1674–92 v20 manuscript. The figures are captured in static, contemplative poses, with the rhythmic folds of their attire creating a visual harmony that draws the eye toward the interplay between the human form and the floating, elegant brushstrokes of the poetry.

Meaning & Symbolism

Sumiyoshi Gukei’s work serves as a vital bridge between the historical legacy of the Heian-era poets and the burgeoning artistic identity of the early Edo period. Each figure represents a pillar of Japanese literary history, elevated to the status of a "poetic immortal" for their contributions to the waka tradition. The inclusion of the original poems alongside these portraits anchors the work in the specific cultural obsession of the time: the preservation and aestheticization of classic literature through visual media. It is an homage to a golden age of verse, reinterpreted for a contemporary audience.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut allows this complex historical portrait to exist as a precise, standalone silhouette. Because the cut follows the exact contour of the artwork, the intricate edges of the robes and the delicate calligraphic characters become the defined border of the object itself. This removes the distraction of a rectangular frame, enabling the poet to occupy a laptop lid or journal cover as an isolated, intentional piece of art that sits flush against the surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v20-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788530979
https://thestickerspace.com/products/sumiyoshi-gukei-portraits-and-poems-of-the-thirty-six-poetic-immortals-167492-v20-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
